Waterless Skincare Explained: What It Is and How It Works

Most conventional skincare products contain water. Creams, lotions, cleansers and serums are often formulated with water as a major part of the formula, where it acts primarily as a solvent and vehicle for other ingredients.
Waterless skincare takes a different approach.
Also known as anhydrous skincare, these formulations contain little or no added water and are instead built around ingredients such as plant oils, butters, waxes, esters and other oil-soluble components.
But removing water doesn't automatically make a skincare product more concentrated, effective or sustainable. It fundamentally changes how the product is formulated, how ingredients are delivered and what functions the finished product can perform.

What Is Waterless Skincare?
Waterless skincare generally refers to products formulated without water as a deliberately added ingredient - examples can include:
Face oils
Cleansing oils and balms
Facial balms
Body balms
Certain solid skincare products
Oil-based serums
Because there is no conventional aqueous phase, these products behave differently from emulsions such as creams and lotions. Instead of using water as the continuous phase of the formulation, anhydrous products rely primarily on lipids and other oil-soluble materials to create their texture and deliver ingredients to the skin.
Waterless vs Water-Based Skincare
The biggest difference isn't simply whether the ingredient list contains Aqua.
It's the formulation system. A conventional moisturising cream is usually an emulsion containing both water and oil. This allows formulators to incorporate water-soluble ingredients - such as glycerin - alongside oils, emollients and other lipid-soluble ingredients.
An anhydrous formulation doesn't have the same water phase. This makes it particularly well suited to ingredients such as oils, butters, waxes and certain oil-soluble actives, but limits the use of conventional water-soluble ingredients unless a more specialised delivery system is used. Neither approach is inherently better. They're simply different formulation tools designed to achieve different things.

Does Waterless Skincare Hydrate the Skin?
This is where terminology matters.
Waterless skincare can help skin maintain moisture and feel softer, but an anhydrous product doesn't contain an aqueous phase in the same way as a conventional cream or lotion.
Oils, butters and other lipid-based ingredients primarily act as emollients, helping soften and smooth the skin. Depending on the ingredients and formulation, they may also reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), helping the skin retain the water it already contains.
However, this isn't the same mechanism as a water-containing moisturiser formulated with humectants such as glycerin.
So rather than assuming that waterless skincare is inherently more - or less - hydrating, it's more useful to consider what the individual formulation is designed to achieve.

What Are the Benefits of Waterless Skincare?
Anhydrous formulations can offer several practical formulation advantages.
Concentrated Lipid-Based Formulations
Without water forming the bulk of the product, anhydrous formulas can contain high proportions of oils, butters, waxes and other lipid-soluble ingredients.
This can make them particularly useful when the intended function is emollience, lipid replenishment or reducing moisture loss.
However, "waterless" shouldn't automatically be interpreted as more concentrated in active ingredients. That depends entirely on the formulation.
Different Preservation Requirements
Removing water changes more than the texture of a skincare product - it changes how the entire formulation is designed.
Water-based products require careful microbiological protection because available water can support microbial growth. Some anhydrous formulations may present a lower microbiological risk because of their low water activity, although this depends on the finished formulation and should not be assumed simply because a product contains no added water (ISO, 2017).
Waterless formulations also require different approaches to ingredient selection, stability and oxidation. For example, oils and other lipids can be susceptible to oxidation even when microbial growth is less of a concern.
So waterless doesn't mean formulation-free or preservative-free. It simply presents formulators with a different set of technical challenges.
Useful for Certain Product Formats
Anhydrous formulation works particularly well for products such as:
Face oils • cleansing balms • lip balms • body balms • facial balms • certain solid skincare products
These formats can deliver oils, waxes and lipid-soluble ingredients without requiring a conventional oil-in-water emulsion.

Are There Any Limitations?
Water-Soluble Ingredients Are More Difficult to Incorporate
Many useful cosmetic ingredients are water soluble. Removing the aqueous phase therefore changes which ingredients can readily be incorporated and may require alternative formulation or delivery approaches.
Texture Can Be Richer
Oil, butter and wax-rich formulations can feel heavier than lightweight emulsions, depending on the ingredients used. That can be desirable for some applications and less appealing for others.
Waterless Doesn't Automatically Mean Sustainable
This one deserves its own section. Removing water from a formulation doesn't, by itself, prove that the finished product has a lower environmental impact. Raw-material sourcing, manufacturing, packaging, transport, product concentration, usage rates and end-of-life all contribute to environmental impact. Waterless formulations may offer opportunities to reduce certain resource, packaging or transport impacts, but sustainability must be assessed across the product's full lifecycle.

Is Waterless Skincare Better for Your Skin?
Not necessarily.
Whether a product works well for your skin depends on its complete formulation, not simply whether it contains water.
An anhydrous balm or face oil may be particularly useful when your skin needs additional emollience or lipid support. A water-based moisturiser may be more appropriate when hydration through water-binding ingredients such as humectants is a priority.
Some routines can also benefit from combining the two - for example, using a moisturiser for hydration followed by a face oil or balm where additional emollience is wanted.
Ultimately, waterless and water-based skincare aren't competing systems. They're different formulation approaches that can serve different purposes.
What About People Looking for Simpler Skincare?
For some people, the appeal of waterless skincare isn't simply the absence of water. It's the opportunity to choose simpler, more focused formulations.
Conventional creams and lotions are emulsions of water and oil. Creating a stable, safe and pleasant emulsion can require additional functional ingredients such as emulsifiers, stabilisers and an appropriate preservation system.
Anhydrous products don't require the same type of emulsion system. This can allow formulators to create products around a relatively focused combination of oils, butters, waxes and oil-soluble ingredients.
That doesn't mean these additional ingredients are inherently undesirable, or that a shorter ingredient list automatically makes a product better for your skin. Every ingredient should be judged by its function, safety, concentration and suitability within the complete formulation.
For people who prefer a more minimalist approach, however, a carefully formulated waterless product can offer something appealing: a formulation in which each ingredient has a clear purpose.
